Sources
Maps - A vital source which help show the development of a town or village, with larger scale maps giving details of buildings and structures.
Photographs - Provide visual clues as to any changes to your home and the surrounding area.
Plans - An important source which can show architectural changes and alterations to your home.
Census Records - Allow you to know who lived in the property, along with details such as where they were born and their occupations.
Newspaper articles - Often newspaper archives can give details of individual houses, often if they are being sold.
During the course of the research I visit local history libraries and archives, as well as the larger repositories including The National Archives, London Metropolitan Archives, the British Library and the RIBA Library.
